Session 1: Revisiting the Bottom-Up

The first session will focus on cases of bottom-up placemaking and self-help in the face of state absence and institutional barriers. Three cases from the Philippines, Japan, and Myanmar serve as lenses for exploring the power of, and the challenges facing, grassroots organizing and bottom-up initiatives.

This session will explore how urban activities and community resilience are mediated spatially and temporally. Through mapping and ethnographic work, case studies from Los Angeles, Singapore, and Jakarta highlight the processes of placemaking and negotiations between the formal and the informal that facilitate community resilience.
